On today’s highly competitive Google AdWords pay per click (PPC) search engine, it is now more important than ever to ensure that your PPC campaigns are optimized to their utmost potential. You should be achieving maximum return on investment (ROI) for the keywords or phrases that are most relevant to your business and are most likely to provide you with targeted traffic to your website. With ever growing cost-per-click (CPC) prices throughout the various PPC search engines it is essential that you avoid certain mistakes that will undoubtedly result in poorly performing PPC campaigns.

The Mistakes to Avoid

Long list of less than targeted keywords

Not identifying unique aspects of your product or service

Lack of keywords in your ad text

Directing users solely to your home page

Creation of single Ad Groups

Utilizing single campaigns

Using broad match only

Failure to optimize Ad Serving for your ads

Not tracking results

Entering the content network without modifying bids

Long List of Less Than Targeted Keywords
When you first set out to create your AdWords campaign it is of utmost importance that you do not go “keyword crazy”, what this means is that you must not create long lists of irrelevant and generic keywords. For example if you were an automotive dealership then it would not be in your best interest to target the keyword “truck”. The reason being is that the cost per click (CPC) for such a generic keyword would be incredibly high when compared to a more descriptive relevant keyword such as “T-Z783 Extended Cab”. An example of an irrelevant keyword which would not produce conversions if you strictly conducted automotive sales would be “tail light covers” the phrase may bring visitors to your website but if they do not find what they are looking for when they get there they will be gone just as quickly as they arrived.

Not Identifying Unique Aspects of Your Product or Service
Before implementing your AdWords campaign you must first understand exactly what it is that makes you stand out from your competition. By identifying your unique products or services you will have a lot more clarity on how to rise above your competitors and zone in on the keywords or phrases that are unique to your business. I would recommend that you perform an analysis of your competition, have a look and see what they are doing and which phrases they are using. After conducting a competition analysis and after understanding what makes your products or services unique you will be able to come up with a strategy that will topple your competitors.

Lack of Keywords in Your Ad Text
When creating your descriptive ad copy it is imperative that you find a means to inject your keywords in to your title and description while maintaining the delicate balance of clarity and relevance. Your ad copy should be tailored in such a way that when read by a visitor they know exactly what they are getting in to when they click on your ad, which brings me to my next point.

Directing Users Solely to Your Home Page
Taking the time to decide on which destination URL should be designated to which ad instead of pointing all ads in a campaign to your homepage is an oversight that I come across far too often. When you finish with compiling your list of relevant keywords that describe unique products or services of your business, why on earth would you then send everyone to your homepage and let them navigate through your site in hopes of finding what it is that they are looking for. Instead why not send them straight to the page that contains exactly what was described to them within your ad copy. As an example if you were an automotive dealership and your ad contains the keyword “T-Z783 Extended Cab” instead of sending them to www.auto-motive-dealership.com send them to www.auto-motive-dealership.com/T-Z783_Extended_Cab.html.

Creation of Single Ad Groups
By categorizing ads that are targeting related keywords into a common ad-group will create a much higher level of control that you have over your entire campaign. Let’s say that you were a sporting goods store, start by grouping all ads targeted towards hockey skates into a single Ad Group. You would then create another ad-group which would be targeting hockey sticks and another containing hockey gloves and so on. By organizing your ad-group structure in this manner gives you the ability to create in-depth reports on the performance of each ad-group.

Utilizing Single Campaigns
Once you have your Ad Groups sorted out into easy to identify categories you may then move on to the next step of creating relevant campaigns. From the example above you have created Ad Groups containing separate products of hockey skates, sticks, gloves etc. Now it is time to create a container for all of the Ad Groups into one campaign entitled “hockey equipment”. You would then repeat the process creating Ad Groups for tennis, one group for shoes one for racquets etc and then once again you drop them all into a single campaign entitle “tennis equipment”. Having highly organized campaigns is the key to determine which ads are creating the optimal conversions.

Using Broad Match Only
When you do not take advantage of the phrase matching options that are available to you chances are you are missing out on potential customers and creating a higher CPC. Broad matches are usually less targeted than exact and phrase matching. Broad matching is the default option your ads will appear for expanded matches such as plurals or relevant keyword variations. When utilizing phrase match your ad will appear for search terms in the order that you specify and sometimes for other terms. Exact matching is by far the most targeted option to use. You will appear for the exact keyword specified. Negative keyword is also a fantastic option to utilize in order to specify which keywords you do not want to appear for.
Broad match Default option: * blue widget

Phrase match Surround the keyword in quotes: * “blue widget”

Exact match Surround the keyword in square brackets: * [blue widget]

Negative match Place a negative character before the keyword: * -blue widget

Failure To Optimize Ad Serving For Your Ads

When you take advantage of AdWords Ad Serving service basically what you will be doing is showing your most popular ads more often. The AdWords platform will give weight to ads with the highest click through rates (CTRs) and display them more often then keywords with lower (CTRs) within the same ad-group.

Not Tracking Results
In order to have any idea on your AdWords campaign performance you must be able to see the keywords that work as well as those that do not. Google AdWords supplies a vast array of very useful tracking tools. Google has also built in to the user interface Google Analytics which is a marvellous web analytics tool that provides you with in-depth reporting on all aspects of your campaign performance. I can not stress enough the importance of creating goals for your AdWords campaign to measure your success by.

Entering The Content Network Without Modifying Bids
Within the AdWords platform you have recently been given the ability to set different bids for the content network compared to that of the search network. If you do not set different bids on the content network for certain keywords, you will be paying more per click than you should be. After lowering the prices on certain keywords you will notice that the amount of click throughs that you will be attaining will remain the same as they were at the higher bid.

Conclusion
The purpose for this article was to create awareness for common mistakes and to eliminate frustrations that may emerge when managing Google AdWords campaigns. The points mentioned above are compiled from management mistakes that I have stumbled upon time and time again in hopes to assist you in creating a marketing campaign that will generate dramatic increases to the profits of your business.

Probably, the most important factor to succeed in the Adsense game is to locate and select profitable niche markets and develop a massive keyword list related to the chosen niche.

You can find many software and websites to develop your Adsense keyword list. I, personally, use wordtracker and overture suggestion tools. But the best keywords come directly from Google.

How To Generate A Massive Adsense Keyword List:

First you must go to Google Adwords Keywords Tool External, located at: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Put in your main niche related keyword. Uncheck use synonyms and click get more keywords.

At the bottom of the returned list, click add all. The keywords are then transported over to the right side of the page. You’re done. (These steps can generate a basic Adsense keywords list, but with Google you can go further.)

Pull up another web page and go to Google.com. Now do a search for your main keyword and just leave that page open.

Now go back to the Google keyword tool and select Site-Related Keywords.

Take the first URL from your Google search and put it into the tool and click get keywords. Send all the keywords over to the right side of the page and repeat the process with all of the URLs on the first page of Google.

Take a look at all the words you are getting and think about what is going on here. You are essentially getting Google to give you all the words they think are relevant to the content on each of the sites on their first page. It is not simply a drilldown to the useless. It is relevance by relationship.

In the ecuation of Adsense optimization income you need to chose the right markets, provide tons of quality content and achieve backlinks to your websites.

Link popularity, in a very simple definition, refers to the number of pages that link to a given web site. Incoming links are the most important factor in generating traffic for your site: they drive visitors directly to it and they are the most important element considered by search engines to determine the order of their search results. However, link popularity is not about receiving as many links as possible.

Link building is the process of researching, requesting and encouraging links to improve a web site’s link popularity. But, is this a SEO task? In order to answer this question we must define two types of incoming links that are often distinguished (specially by search engines) based on their nature:

Natural links: Those that are due to the intrinsic nature of the Internet: people publish web pages and include links to resources that they consider useful for their visitors. Natural links are not requested, but given voluntarily and spontaneously. They use to have different anchor texts, are rarely reciprocal and increase gradually over the time. There is no direct way to get natural links for your site, unless offering a great content and wait for others to link to your pages.

Artificial links: Those that are requested in any way: link exchanges, paid links… Search engines tend to ignore (or in abusive cases, even penalize) these kind of links. Artificial links use to have identical or similar anchor texts, are often reciprocal and increase suddenly when the link campaign starts.

There is an even more obvious type of artificial links: link spamming. Take into account that not all artificial links are spam, but of course all spam links are artificial. Link spam techniques include:

Link exchange programs and networks: Using automated or semi-automated methods of exchanging links between several sites.

Link farms: Submitting a web site to pages with no other content than hundreds or thousands of links to other unrelated pages.

Guestbook and forum spam: Posting useless comments in guestbooks, forums and other similar sites with the only purpose of including one or several links.

Blog spam: Similar to the previous point. Making use of comments and trackbacks to post links in a blog.

Hidden links: Including links on a web site that are indexable for search engines but invisible for humans. These links are usually used to create link networks in order to increase the link popularity of the participant sites.

Referrer log spam: Some sites have a referrer log that shows which pages link to them. This technique consists of making automated accesses to that site from a link placed on a spammer’s page, so the log will include a link to the spammer’s site.

Search engines are the main reason why link spam exists, specially since Google started considering link popularity as one of the most important ranking factors and created a measure for it (PageRank). However, those same search engines are now the main link spam fighters. Link spam techniques are severely penalized, and you should avoid them for any succesful and long-term search engine marketing campaign.
According to the above, artificial links are useless or even harmful for your web site, and natural links can’t be obtained in an artificial way, so, how do SEOs work on the link building strategy?:

The zone between natural and artificial linking: There is a thin, vaguely defined, zone between both types of linking. It’s something artificial in the way that it’s requested, and it’s natural in the way that it corresponds to the nature of Internet: making submissions to very relevant and high-quality directories, sending emails to webmasters that could be legitimately interested in your web site (and could potentially link to it), encouraging links in any way… These techniques won’t harm but, on the contrary, could ultimately improve your web site’s link popularity.

Masked artificial linking: A risky strategy consisting on getting artificial links and trying to make them look natural to search engines: Exchanging non-reciprocal links, paying for them in a few very popular sites, varying their anchor texts, getting them gradually over months and not in a few days… Currently people use to mix the terms SEO and link building. So, to make it clear, these are different but complementary concepts:

SEO is a wider concept than link building as it includes the optimization of on-the-page factors. Link building is a wider concept than SEO as it includes other marketing strategies aimed to improve the web site’s quality and exposure and hence encourage the natural links to it.

In a previous article I talked about the 3 Google Adsense Success Factors. But if you already have a website, you can increase your adsense income almost immediately improving your Clickthrough Ratio (Adsense CTR) The 2 other factors (Website traffic and Income per click) can also be improved but they will take more time.

First you need to study carefully the optimization tips provided by Google at:

http://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/static.py?page=tips.html

One of the things that set Adsense apart from other banner ad programs is your ability to customize the code to fit the look of your site, and the wide variety of unit sizes available. As a website publisher you can control the following components.

Text Color

Background Color

Border Color

Ad Format

Ad Placement

Number Of Appearing Ads

You can control these components, but you can’t control the copy of the shown ads because advertisers write the ads which are then shown on your site. Therefore, in this way, there is a limit on what kind of optimization you can perform. You can’t make advertisers write better ads afterall, luckily though Google is constantly analyzing advertisements and ones that do not get clicked on end up filtered out or shown less often.

In future articles I will analyze in detail how to optimize each of these components.

Google has released Google Related Links. This constitutes a new feature in the world of online advertising. With the easy code addition to your webpage, Google will inspect your webpage and will add dynamic theme relevant content links to your website. Google related links can be placed in any free section or your webpage, but it is recommended to place them on the navigation section of your site. This way you will be offering users navigation to additional related content. These links may go to related news, related searches or related pages based on the topics found on that page.

You can find numerous formats that webmasters can select and use. Therefore the implementation of Google Related links is a fast and easy work. All that you need to do is copy and past the javascript coding to the page and when visitors come to the page, Google will provide dynamic links to other sources of information that is related to the content on your page.

Can Google Related Links Be Useful For Your Visitors?

The main reasons for the big success of Google’s Adsense are the easy way to implement into your webpages, the huge income opportunity and the added value provided to your website visitors, because with the use of Adsense you provide an automated way to display related searches, pages, and news on their sites in a quick manner.

You can get more information about Google Related links at:

http://www.google.com/relatedlinks/faq.html

The reason for this Google’s addition is to provide users with the best possible search experience.

The AdSense affiliate program

The first is for AdSense itself and it is generous. The basic position is that if you

Refer a new publisher to AdSense

They qualify and sign up, and

They earn $100 from clicks (legitimately!)

You get paid $100

Of course you need to be an AdSense publisher yourself to be able to profit from this affiliate program. There is also likely to be a time lag between people signing up and you getting paid because it takes newcomers a while to earn $100.

The Firefox affiliate program

The second referral program is for the Firefox browser and associated Google toolbar. Here the basic position is

You refer a new user to the Firefox browser download page

They install it on their computer

They run it for the first time

You get paid $1

Ok, so that’s not so generous but there are 2 reasons why both these programs ought really to make you some easy money.

Is it possible to build up an Adsense empire?

When you finally make the decision to become a website entrepreneur you will, probably, fall into one of two broad categories:

Publish 100 websites that each earn $1 a day profit

Publish 1 website that earns $100 a day profit

In fact, the reality of it is, most people end up somewhere in between. Handling 100 websites is not an easy task. You have to consider the website maintenance, management and content issues. However, having one website open a new window. You now have a risk of fluctuation (100 websites net fluctuates much less than 1 website) You can have many kinds of fluctuations: search engines algorithm’s, market trends, etc…

You can adapt your plan on the way, but you’ll have an easier time if you start out going in the direction of where you want to end up.

Insider’s Adsense Tip
If your goal is to build a net of different niche websites, use a CMS (content management system) to handle your content and your website design. You have many free options in the market. Wordpress, mambo or drupal are good solutions for your CMS needs.
